Are you missing teeth and wondering how to restore your smile? At Dream Dental, we specialize in restorative dental treatments, helping to improve our patients smiles to their natural state. Dental implants are one of the most effective and successful treatments we provide. Here are some things to consider if you are torn between dental implants and dental bridges.

Understanding Dental Implants

Dental implants are used when a patient has a missing tooth and they would like a long-term solution to replace the tooth. A dental implant will use a titanium post (which acts as the root of the tooth) to support a crown. The titanium screw will be surgically inserted into the jawbone, allowing time for the screw to fuse to the bone. Once the screw is anchored properly, an abutment is attached to the frame post and will then allow for a dental crown to be screwed into place.

Different Type of Dental Implants

There are different types of dental implants used to restore your smile:

  • Endosteal Implants – these implants are directly implanted into the jawbone during surgery. An additional surgery is needed to connect the post to the first implant, then an artificial tooth is then secured to the post.
  • Subperlosteal Implants – A metal frame is fitted onto the jawbone below the gum tissue. The metal frame is fixed to the jawbone once the gums have properly healed and an artificial tooth is attached to the post.

Understanding Dental Bridges

Dental bridges are used to fill a gap between one or more missing teeth. Dental bridges are supported by natural teeth or implants on either side. The dental bridge requires the abutment teeth to act as anchors to hold it in place.

Different Types of Dental Bridges

There are several different ways a dental bridge can be used to restore your health, but these are the most common:

  • Traditional bridge – This bridge is the most common in the dental world. It is made of either ceramics or porcelain fused to metal. The bridge is created by a crown for the tooth or implant to hold it in place.
  • Cantilever bridge – This dental bridge is not as common as it is normally used in areas where you will not place a lot of force on the teeth. They are used then there are adjacent teeth found on only one side of the missing tooth gap.
  • Bonded bridges – This bridge is made of porcelain and the porcelain is fused to a metal framework and the existing teeth on either side of the gap are bonded to the metal or porcelain using wings on the bridge.
