Dental Implants Vs. Mini Implants

By | Mini Implant | No Comments

At Dream Dental Implant Center in Salt Lake City, we provide a number of dental implant solutions for patients with missing teeth issues. Mini dental implants are often misunderstood by patients. We want to help clear up the confusion about dental implants and mini implants to help our patients better understand these procedures and what is the best choice for their situation.

What are Mini Dental Implants?

Mini dental implants provide a number of benefits to traditional dental implants as the screw used to support the implant is not drilled deeply into the jaw, making the recovery time quicker. A less invasive procedure is preferable for many dental patients that do not want to have extensive oral surgery. Mini dental implants do provide an excellent replacement for missing teeth, but not all patients are candidates. Mini implants are prone to shifting in the mouth based on eating and movement. If a patient does tend to grind their teeth, mini implants may not be the right choice.

If you have been dealing with dental bridges, a mini implant is an alternative treatment to consider. The implants do not require as much support, so patients with bridges find they provide the same amount of support as their bridge. Mini implants are still new to the industry, so there is not a lot of long-term research to show their effectiveness. Mini implants are used to snap in a device such as a denture or over-denture.

Traditional Dental Implants

Traditional dental implants are stronger as the screw is embedded deeply into the jawbone. The post needs healing time to bond with the jawbone, to ensure its strength. The procedure does take longer, but it is generally preferred to the mini implant based on specific patient needs. Regular dental implants are stronger when you chew and look and feel just as stable as a natural tooth.

While we do recommend traditional dental implants, not all patients will be candidates for them. Issues with bone density can lead to problems with dental implants. Dr. Hendricks will need to evaluate your oral health and look at your bone density to determine the best treatment. It is important to note that mini dental implants are cheaper, but they do not always last. At Dream Dental Implant Center, we only use standard dental implants as they last longer. Regular dental implants are used for a variety of options for patients with missing teeth problems.
